The weekend

We will meet in the car park at 10:30am on Saturday 1st June  before heading up to the moorland. Allow plenty of time to navigate Devon's country roads, remember phone signal can be patchy and car share in case parking is busy! We will spend the morning getting our navigation brains back in gear, refreshing our contour and compass skills on hill and moorland terrain which is more 'open' than the Brecons. In response to feedback, in the afternoon you'll have the chance to do some independent legs.

Our home for the night is a private wildcamping field near Brisworthy. There are NO facilities but we will have cars on the edge of the field so please pack appropriately (as always see the kit list and ask if needed). I will bring a container of water but it would be sensible to have bring a 2l bottle in addition to what you are carrying.

Sunday's walk will be decided based on how Saturday goes but will include planning routes.

Getting the most from the weekend

If you would like to recap the skills we've learnt before we go then join the refresher session on Wednesday 15th May at 7.30pm. (Please note as this is our 4th adventure, we won't be having a seperate Q&A zoom).

It will be helpful if you have your own map and compass. Dartmoor is covered by OL28 (laminated strongly recommended) and a Silva Type 4 is a good choice of compass (do NOT get a military one!). Dartmoor can be wet and wild and we will be exposed so make sure those waterproofs have been recently retreated and you carry plenty of layers. The terrain is hilly, uneven and often wet so bring walking boots with good ankle support. It would also be worth making sure you've done some recent walking after the winter so you are feeling ready for the hills. Why not add some of the items to your Christmas or birthday wishlist and shop around for best prices.

Nearer the time, you will be emailed a challenge to research before you come...! They will all be slightly different so keep it to yourself until the weekend.
